#GoingToBat Community Spotlight: Miguel Cabrera
Miggy making a difference in kids’ lives
MIAMI, Fla. -- Miguel Cabrera traded in his uniform for a tuxedo a few weeks ago at The Miggy Ball Gala, his foundation’s inaugural charity event. The event was held at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami, where Cabrera resides in the offseason.
Live and silent auctions were held during the Jan. 28 event. Proceeds supported local youth baseball programs and scholarships facilitated by The Miguel Cabrera Foundation.
Major Leaguers Jon Jay, Manny Machado and Hanley Ramirez were among those who attended to support Cabrera’s cause. The Miggy Ball Gala also featured live music, including Latin Grammy Award-winning duo and fellow Venezuelan countrymen Chino y Nacho.
The Miguel Cabrera Foundation focuses its efforts on two main activities: revitalizing baseball fields in schools and neighborhoods in order for athletics to be used as a catalyst for student achievement and providing academic scholarships for students.
“I want to teach what I love, what I’ve done the past 17 years – baseball. Get in touch with kids, try to change their lives,” Cabrera told MLB.com.
The two-time MVP and 2012 American League Triple Crown winner hopes the success of the Miggy Ball Gala leads to more frequent events benefitting his foundation.
