Green-e Energy Certifies Southern California Edison’s New Clean Energy Options
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., July 12, 2016 /3BL Media/ — Center for Resource Solutions (CRS) announced on July 12, 2016 that two Southern California Edison (SCE) clean energy programs have received Green-e Energy certification—”Green Rate,” a voluntary program offering a 50% and 100% renewable energy option to SCE residential and commercial customers in California, and “Community Renewables,” a program that allows customers to contract directly with developers of clean energy facilities and receive bill credit through the utility. Clean energy generation for both programs will be located in California, and will not count towards the State’s 50% by 2030 renewable portfolio standard goal. Energy generated will be in addition to this goal.
Under Senate Bill 43, the state’s three investor owned utilities (IOUs) are required to offer a “Green Tariff Shared Renewables Program,” and SCE is the latest IOU to offer its customers Green-e Energy Certified green pricing programs under this requirement. Together the three IOUs—SCE, San Diego Gas and Electric, and Pacific Gas and Electric—supply nearly 80% of the state’s electricity.
“We are excited to welcome SCE to Green-e and certify their program, which offers a high-quality clean energy option from renewable energy produced right here in California,” said Jennifer Martin, executive director of Center for Resource Solutions. “SCE customers can feel good that they are not only greening their own electricity mix, but directly incentivizing the development of new renewable generation throughout the state.”
“SCE strives to provide customers with a suite of diverse rate options to meet their needs, and we are pleased to offer our customers additional clean energy options,” said Marc Ulrich, Vice President of Customer Programs & Services at SCE. “These rates provide customers with the opportunity to support locally generated renewable energy and contribute to a cleaner, healthier environment by further reducing greenhouse gas emissions.”
Green-e Energy is the leading renewable energy certification and verification program in North America. In 2014 over 836,000 total retail customers—including 50,000 businesses—purchased nearly 38 million megawatt hours of certified electricity, enough to supply nearly half of all residential electricity use in California for a year. The program provides independent, third-party certification to ensure that certified renewable energy meets strict environmental and consumer-protection standards, and is the only program of its kind in the U.S.
Providers of Green-e Energy certified renewable energy agree to abide by the Green-e Energy Code of Conduct, and meet strict disclosure and truth-in-advertising requirements. All participants in Green-e Energy undergo an annual third-party verification audit to document that the company purchased or generated enough quantity and type of renewable energy to meet customer demand and marketing claims.
