Green Mountain Energy Customers Work Together for a Cleaner Planet by Choosing Renewable Energy
In 2020, Green Mountain Energy customers prevented more than 8.4 billion pounds of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of planting nearly 1 million trees!
HOUSTON, April 22, 2021 /3BL Media/ – Earth Day is a time when many people come face-to-face to confront several thought-provoking questions around global warming – How will it affect us? What role do we play? What actions can we take to mitigate the threat? The solutions for climate stability are complex, but when it comes down to our personal choices to purposely reduce our greenhouse gas emissions, it can be simple.
Green Mountain Energy customers are taking action, preventing more than 8.4 billion pounds of carbon dioxide (CO2) in 2020 alone by choosing renewable energy and carbon offset products. For perspective, this is equivalent of planting nearly 1 million trees or not taking 9.3 million cross-country flights.
Since 1997, Green Mountain Energy customers have collectively avoided 90.2 billion pounds of carbon dioxide, the equivalent of planting nearly 11 million trees. The 2020 results validate that the gap between environmental concern and consumer action is poised to shrink as tech-minded millennials choose clean energy sources for their homes and businesses.
“Green Mountain Energy customers are using the power of choice to change the way power is made by increasing the demand for renewable energy solutions while reducing their carbon footprint,” said Mark Parsons, vice president and general manager of Green Mountain Energy. “More customers are seeking to live sustainably across all parts of their lives, including the energy they use at home and in their personal transportation. I am optimistic about the impact we’ll continue to have. Our focus right now is to support electric vehicle (EV) adoption with different options that promote home charging using emission-free solar energy.”
Transportation and electricity production account for more than 50% of all greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the United States. As more EVs come online, it is crucial that customers continue to explore options to charge EVs with renewable energy sources to maximize emission reductions. In 2020, Green Mountain launched Riding on Sunshine™, an EV initiative to advance clean transportation through different tools and electricity plans that suit different stages in customers’ solar and EV journeys. Customers have the option to install rooftop solar panels, source their energy from solar parks, or offset emissions from fuel-powered vehicles with Green Mountain carbon offsets. The company also offers an EV-Shopping Tool where customers interested in purchasing or leasing an EV are connected with Group 1, a leading operator in the automotive retailing industry, to guide them in the shopping process.
