Grow Detroit’s Young Talent Interns Learning From Comerica Bank

Getting a head start can help you gain better position, and that’s what the Grow Detroit’s Young Talent program and Comerica Bank are doing for several students this summer.

Young professionals from the GDYT program joined the team at Comerica as interns to learn different aspects of the banking industry. The group of talented young men and women work with staff to build their professional portfolios.

The students are working in multiple departments, learning vital skills that will help them excel as they move forward into their future careers including: wealth management, human resources-diversity and inclusion, and commercial underwriting divisions.

“This time of the year is very exciting for everyone here,” said Amy Rosswurm, diversity and inclusion consultant. “The managers who participate in the program look forward to working with the students, whom are always excited and eager to learn.

“Comerica Bank strongly believes in investing in the future, and that means investing in individuals who will lead the workforce in the years to come.”

This opportunity will allow the students to gain invaluable, professional work experience and learn directly from managers within the bank, even getting the opportunity to spend time with Comerica Bank’s Michigan Market President, Mike Ritchie.

In addition to gaining a professional skillset, the interns take a financial education course where they will learn to successfully manage money and investments.

The interns were paired with Comerica at the GDYT Career Fair at Cass Tech High School. Students had the opportunity to learn about different organizations and apply for positions that matched their interests. Participating organizations chose candidates that would best fit the needs of their company and decisions were made and announced at the fair.

Comerica Bank has supported the GDYT citywide organization for many years, hosting interns from the program to learn the fundamentals of finance.

This initiative began as a way for Comerica to give students in the Detroit Public School system additional opportunities for employment and real-world business experience, and the relationship has bloomed into an ongoing partnership that fosters the education of emerging professionals in Detroit.

GDYT is a professional training program that partners with local organizations to employ young adults from 14 to 24-years-old. The program introduces young professionals to entry-level career opportunities and prepares them for professional futures.

Eligible individuals are recruited through educational and community institutions. To be eligible for employment, participants must be a permanent resident of Detroit.
