Health for All in Focus: “Humanitarian Emergency Response”

A spotlight from GSK's 2015 Responsible Business Supplement:

Every year millions of people are displaced by disasters and emergency situations. These crises can devastate families, leaving them without access to adequate food, shelter or healthcare.

GSK works with partners and humanitarian organisations to prepare for and respond to emergency situations. In some instances, we fast-track the development of life-saving vaccines, and in others, we contribute by donating cash, products and our employees’ time. We also invest in long-term rebuilding and reconstruction in the aftermath of a disaster.

In 2015, GSK worked with Save the Children to create a strategic and operational framework for humanitarian action and to mobilise the resources and expertise of both organizations to strengthen our response. This included providing seed funding to help Save the Children establish an Emergency Health Unit – a team of specialist health workers who deliver basic healthcare within 72 hours after disaster strikes.

The unit began in the UK and has been extended to the Asia Pacific region. In the USA, we recently announced a partnership with Save the Children and the National Center for Disaster Preparedness to help communities better plan to protect and care for children in the event of a disaster.
