The Homer Fund: Taking Care of Our People Through Tough Times
2020 brought many unexpected and life-changing events, from the COVID-19 pandemic to a seemingly endless lineup of natural disasters. Through it all, The Homer Fund — a nonprofit charity funded by contributions from The Home Depot associates, for associates — offered support during times of need.
Homer Fund grants given to associates help those experiencing loss of childcare, the need to quarantine, emergency travel expenses, a spouse’s unemployment or, sadly, funeral expenses. Last year, more than $16.4 million was awarded to 7,000 associates facing hardships. More than $2 million was awarded to those affected by COVID-19.
In 2020, The Homer Fund processed grants related to natural disasters for 12 consecutive months. Some disasters were large and impacted many associates, such as hurricanes and wildfires. Others were localized events, like tornadoes and severe weather storms.
Emergency funds that were issued assisted with temporary shelter and food due to evacuations and loss of electricity. More funding was available for those who required assistance with additional expenses like home repairs, establishing a new residence or replacing damaged furniture and clothing.
