How Critical is Mid Management's Role in Stakeholders Engagement?

How do you engage your employees?  Does it matter?  Two new reports provide some interesting insight. 

Viewed by many professional consulting firms to be the pivot point in a company’s ultimate success or failure, productive talent can be a key differentiator in both short and long-term business sustainability.  To be most effective, leaders need to engage employees in the direction of the business.  However, middle management may be losing its influence:   •    According to Towers Watson’s 2010 Global Workforce Study, employees are taking greater ownership in their career; however, confidence in leaders and managers is disturbingly low.   •    A DDI study indicates that front-line managers have confidence in setting work standards, but most feel less skilled in gaining commitment or initiating action with employees.    Leveraging human resource requires a culture that encourages employees to become engaged in the direction of the organization.  This places middle management in a key role in the flow up and down the organization.  It also presents a significant area improvement for aspiring business sustainability minded companies.   One of the most common miss-steps taken by many business executives is assuming the role of ‘king of the hill’.  In this case, executives attempt to sell a predefined change to the organization as a way to attain agreement and to accelerate implementation. Our professional experience has shown that this method is often met with resistance by the unengaged stakeholder.   In contrast, successful leadership practices recognize that communication and active learning are key success factors in the pursuit of business sustainability.  By allowing flexibility and promoting innovation across the organization, leaders are positioning the business to capture the interests of its stakeholders and ensure their active participation.
