How Stanley Black & Decker Is Enhancing Skills to Revitalize Communities
As featured in Stanley Black & Decker's 2020 ESG Report
We are helping our employees and the makers of tomorrow master the skills and expertise needed to secure productive jobs and revitalize communities, now and well into the future, even as the nature of jobs and work itself rapidly evolves.
Maker Month 2020
At Stanley Black & Decker, every October is devoted to Maker Month—working to empower makers and tradespeople around the world and inspire individuals to pursue trade skills. Our month-long campaign shines a light on the trade skills gap, a global issue made worse by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. There are an estimated 10 million manufacturing jobs today that are unfilled due to this skills gap.
In 2020, we created a new Maker Month resource portal and partnered with iHeart Media to promote the importance of skilled trades. We also introduced “31 Faces of Makers,” a series of individual profiles of tradespeople, one for each day of October.
Trade Scholarships
As part of the Maker Month initiative, we have established scholarship programs to support future trades professionals. The DEWALT Trades Scholarship will assist 20 individuals in the U.S. attending a two-year college or vocational-technical school and pursuing a trade degree/certificate in an industry aligned with DEWALT’s core focus areas, including but not limited to Construction, Industrial, Motor/Power Sector, Mechanics and Technology. The STANLEY Security Scholarship will launch in 2021 to support students in North America, the U.K. and Europe as they attend school to become a security technician.
STEAM Initiatives
We support Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM) education in our local communities around the world. In 2020, we further leveraged our partnership with Discovery Education, a leader in e-learning, to create resources for our employees to volunteer virtually. We expanded our Making for Good Challenge so that individual students could apply if they were learning remotely. We added live Maker Moments on social media for viewers to participate in, and we created an educator webinar to help teachers work remotely.
