Ingersoll Rand Hosts Charlotte Engineering Early College High School Students for Engineers Week Event
Students toured laboratories to learn about future engineering careers
DAVIDSON, N.C., March 15, 2016 /3BL Media/ – Ingersoll Rand (NYSE:IR), a world leader in creating comfortable, sustainable and efficient environments, hosted 96 high school students on February 29 at its North American headquarters and Corporate Center in Davidson as part of Engineers Week outreach.
The visit showcased the company’s engineering technologies and capabilities to ninth and tenth grade students attending Charlotte Engineering Early College (CEEC), part of Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, which focuses on energy and sustainability in the engineering disciplines.
“The students not only got to see what different types of engineers do every day, they learned more about the creative and strategic thinking that goes into being an engineer, which brings the CEEC engineering courses to life,” said William Leach, principal of CEEC. “By showing the students engineering challenges and solutions that Ingersoll Rand engineers design, they better understand the business aspects of engineering and the wide range of career opportunities available in multiple engineering fields.”
The Davidson campus tour featured activities in the power tools, fluid management and material handling lab where students used ARO pumps to compete in a duck race and visited pump reliability and testing labs. Club Car provided golf car models for the students to evaluate and propose design variations, and a NASCAR Camping World Truck Series vehicle visited to demonstrate Ingersoll Rand’s power tools in action. An employee panel then highlighted individual career paths and options for CEEC students to consider as they explored their interests.
“I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to share real-world engineering experiences with the students from Charlotte Engineering Early College,” said Hillary Halstead, Ingersoll Rand engineer and member of the CEEC board. “Their enthusiasm, curiosity and unique perspective was truly inspiring.”
The students gained an understanding of what engineering and sustainability means in industry, learned more about the Ingersoll Rand product development process, and learned about the technical and communication skills necessary for a career in engineering.
Ingersoll Rand is a corporate partner of CEEC, a small public school of choice that allows students to take college courses at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte (UNCC) preparing them to enter a college of engineering after completing the five-year program.
