Whether you’ve heard about the Action Team through your friends, social media, on the internet or viewed our PSAs —becoming an Action Team Captain is a rewarding experience worth signing up for.
Many of you may have some questions about the Action Team and how to #JoinOurTeam, but aren’t sure who to ask or how to start a team at your school. As long as you stay committed and have fun with it, starting an Action Team can be easy!
Just ask Alex Duke, Action Team Captain at Brunswick high school in Ohio. Alex first heard about the Action Team while watching a baseball game. He saw our PSA and was immediately interested since the program incorporates two activities he is passionate about-baseball and volunteering.
Alex jumped at the opportunity to start an Action Team, but was concerned because an after-school community service group already existed at his high school.
Instead of getting discouraged, Alex did what many of you can do if you face a similar situation—he molded his after-school community service group with the Action Team to create a volunteer experience designed specifically for his school.
The Action Team at Alex’s school worked together with the volunteer group at his school to participate in annual activities such as Bike MS and the Brunswick Charity Basketball Game. Together, they participated in a new fundraiser, the Kick-It Kickball tournament, a national nonprofit that raises money for pediatric cancer.
In order to get his peers excited to participate and to raise more funds, Alex ran an advertising campaign through word of mouth and posters to spread awareness. Through his hard work and efforts, Alex and his Action Team raised over $500.00 in one day.
This year, Alex and the Brunswick Action Team already are planning events with the Big Brother Big Sister Club and Elementary Helpers. He and his fellow captains are looking forward to another successful year of making a difference in the lives of their community.
