Jake Peavy and Volunteers of America Upgrade Veterans Transitional Home

Jake Peavy led a team of volunteers who spent part of the weekend building out a community area at a transitional home for more than 30 formerly homeless veterans in Mobile, Ala., called Eagle’s Landing.

The service project brought together the Jake Peavy Foundation and Home Depot together with Volunteers of America Southeast, a local affiliate of the Players Trust’s national partner that operates the Eagles Landing facility and others like it across the country.

“I can’t think of a better cause for our Foundation to support on Veterans Day weekend,” Peavy said. “This is what the mission is all about and we’re proud to partner with great organizations like Home Depot and Volunteers of America Southeast to make this possible for our local heroes at Eagle’s Landing.”

More than 40 people from Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force joined the effort to improve the transitional home by landscaping, installing benches and creating an area for the veterans to engage in grilling and picnics.IMG_0797

The service project was the final piece of Peavy’s Veteran’s Day weekend fundraising effort, which also included a charity golf tournament on Friday and a concert that evening in which the three-time all-star and friends jammed with the New Orleans-based Honey Island Swamp Band.

The Jake Peavy Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt charitable organization founded in 2012 by the San Francisco Giants’ starting pitcher. Jake is a two-time World Series Champion, three-time All Star and he captured the National League Cy Young Award in 2007.

Jake created his foundation as a vehicle to positively impact lives and strengthen the local communities that he has had the privilege of playing baseball in over the years including: San Francisco, Boston, San Diego, Chicago, and his hometown of Mobile, Alabama.
