WASHINGTON, Aug. 21, 2013 /3BL Media/ –The team of LG Electronics USA, PTO Today and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are at it again for some back-to-school fun, showing families how to save energy and money at home, while teaching children how energy efficiency is good for the environment.

Team ENERGY STAR teaches kids how to save energy and help protect the climate with fun educational activities and energy-saving actions they can do at home with their families.

Since its launch last year, tens of thousands of children and families have participated in Team ENERGY STAR – demonstrating parents’ growing interest in finding fun ways to engage their kids in activities that are good for the environment.  The EPA’s back-to-school campaign builds on the success of the spring 2013 Team ENERGY STAR promotion, also supported by long-time ENERGY STAR Partner LG and PTO Today, an organization serving parent-teacher organizations from schools across the country.

In an effort to inspire kids as they head back to school, the EPA is asking families to visit energystar.gov/team and take the “EPIC Pledge” to save energy at home with Team ENERGY STAR.  The web site includes ideas for Pledges that range from turning off electronics when not in use to recycling to planting a tree.

The first 250 families to take the EPIC Pledge will receive their own copy of the movie, EPIC on DVD, from the creators of ICE AGE. After submitting their EPIC Pledge, families are encouraged to share their pledge and other Team ENERGY STAR content through social media channels, such as Facebook and Twitter, for a chance to win prizes from LG Electronics, including ENERGY STAR certified computer monitors and HDTVs, as well as smartphones and MP3 docking stations.* Top winners also will be featured on LG’s giant billboard in New York City’s Times Square.

“As a long-time ENERGY STAR Partner, LG works year ‘round to educate families on ways they can help protect the environment and save money,” said James Fishler, senior vice president, marketing, LG Electronics USA. “LG has been involved with the Team ENERGY STAR campaign since its launch last year, and we’re excited to see so many families getting involved this year. We’re looking forward to again rewarding families who are making an impact with cool prizes like LG smartphones, flat-panel TVs and computer monitors.”

“Our Team ENERGY STAR back-to-school challenge continues to successfully engage families in saving money and protecting the climate with ENERGY STAR,” said Jill Vohr, director of marketing for the EPA’s ENERGY STAR Labeling Branch, “Now we’ve added a spread-the-word component to encourage more families to get involved and experience the benefits both at home and for the planet.”

Team ENERGY STAR is part of the multi-year, EPA campaign, Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR, developed to engage Americans of all ages in saving energy, money and protecting the environment with ENERGY STAR. If every American household took part in the Change the World, Start with ENERGY STAR Pledge, we would: Save more than 130 billion kWh/yr of electricity, save $23 billion in annual energy costs, and prevent greenhouse gases equivalent to the emissions from 21 million cars.

About ENERGY STAR

EPA’s ENERGY STAR program helps people across America make the best choices to save energy, save money, and fight climate change – at home, at work, in their businesses, and in their communities. Only products, homes, and buildings that meet strict standards of energy efficiency and performance can earn the ENERGY STAR label. In 2012 alone, Americans, with the help of ENERGY STAR, saved $24 billion on their utility bills and prevented greenhouse gas emissions equal to those of 50 million vehicles. From the first ENERGY STAR certified computer in 1992, the ENERGY STAR label can now be found on products in more than 65 different categories, with more than 4.5 billion sold over the past 20 years.
