Minera El Abra, a Freeport-McMoRan Company, is Recognized for Lowering Carbon Footprint With Tire Recovery Program

October 17, 2019 /3BL Media/ — Thanks to a new tire renewal program, Minera El Abra, a subsidiary of Freeport-McMoRan, was recognized for reducing its CO2 emission by 53 tons – or 35 percent.

The program, developed by KalTire Chile, helped El Abra reuse 31 mining equipment tires in 2018, which eliminated the need to produce 26 new tires.

El Abra was one of four companies in Chile that participated in the pilot program developed to encourage mining companies to decrease their carbon footprint by reducing tire waste. Recycling a used tire has a significantly lower impact on the environment than creating a new tire.
