SAN DIEGO, October 14, 2014 /3BL Media/ - The San Diego Green Building Council (SDGBC) and Balfour Beatty Construction partnered with the Chula Vista Elementary School District to host the 3rd Annual Green Apple Day of Service. This annual day of service takes place on the same day at different schools around the world, held locally this year at John J. Montgomery Elementary School in Chula Vista, Calif.

On Saturday, September 27, 2014, John J. Montgomery Elementary School was abuzz as more than 75 volunteers, including 10 students, came out to “green” the campus by performing service work and commencing a year-long Green Schools Challenge implemented by the SDGBC.

“The Green Apple initiative is just an amazing effort,” stated Francisco Escobedo, Superintendent at Chula Vista Elementary School District. “Green Apple Day is going to transform Montgomery School and create a beautiful ambiance for our students...”

A wide range of repairs were performed by Balfour Beatty Construction and SDGBC employees and volunteers, event partners and sponsors, students, and family members including:

·         Creating and planting a new student garden

·         Painting a mural (with help of a professional artist and students)

·         Installing new irrigation, weeding, and general painting

·         Landscaping including new mulch, fencing, plants, and walkways

Brian Cahill, Balfour Beatty’s Southwest division president, also attended to show his support.

“We are privileged to be here today breaking a sweat with our fellow subcontractors, vendors, and members of the district to improve this school site. Everyone is excited about it, and we are happy to be part of it.”

Balfour Beatty Construction led the efforts to recruit volunteers, obtain sponsors and in-kind donations, and manage the improvement projects. The SDGBC spearheaded the concept for a year-long Green Schools Challenge, which kicked-off with the student volunteers’ efforts at Saturday’s Green Apple Day of Service event.

"The work at Montgomery Elementary will improve the learning environment for students and teachers to come - every child deserves a healthy and sustainable school,” stated Renée Daigneault, interim executive director for the San Diego Green Building Council.

Many additional sponsors helped make this year’s Green Apple Day of Service a success including Brady SoCal, Inc., Burkett & Wong Engineers, SCOR Industries, Dynaectric, Gould Electric, Simmons & Wood Inc., Dunn-Edwards Paints, Abbott Engineering, Haywood Baker, Allied Building Products Corp, Arrowhead, Mission Valley Landscape, Glumac, Quality Reinforcing, Inc., Pacific Coast Glazing, Inc., New Dimension Masonry, Inc., Chick-Fil-A, El Tapatio Catering, ValleyCrest, South Bay Fence, Atelier de Voyages, Oldcastle, Chula Vista Elementary School District, Chris Giles Images, Balfour Beatty Construction, and the United States Green Building Council.
