National Grid Joins EPA Efforts to Reduce Methane Emissions
Company becomes founding member of EPA Methane Challenge
WALTHAM, Mass., March 30, 2016 /3BL Media/ – National Grid announced today that they have signed an agreement with the Environment Protection Agency to join the Natural Gas STAR Methane Challenge Program as a founding partner. By signing the agreement the company has pledged to continue its commitment to reduce emissions from the natural gas distribution system it operates in New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
“We are pleased to be a founding member and partner with the EPA to develop the Methane Challenge Program,” said Dean Seavers, president of National Grid, U.S. “This program aligns with our Environmental Defense Fund and Google collaboration to launch a transparent, web-based methane emissions mapping tool. This will allow us to be one of the first local distribution companies to aggressively invest in technologies that will quantify emissions to combat climate change.
As a national leader in addressing this challenge, we will continue our efforts to scientifically study and research system-wide methane emissions as matter of environmental sustainability and climate change mitigation.”
National Grid has worked with regulators in each of the states in which it operates to develop aggressive strategies to replace leak prone pipe. The company plans to invest more than $1 billion in our gas infrastructure this year and $6 billion over the next five years.
