National Grid Joins Low-Carbon Resources Initiative Aimed at Enabling Affordable Net Zero Path
WALTHAM, Mass., January 13, 2020 /3BL Media/ - National Grid today joined the Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI), a five-year initiative to develop and demonstrate key clean energy technologies and decarbonization solutions. These include clean hydrogen, bioenergy, and renewable natural gas, all potential pathways to a decarbonized future.
Low-Carbon Resources Initiative (LCRI)
“The Low-Carbon Resources Initiative directly aligns with National Grid’s ambition to reach net zero by 2050,” said Badar Khan, President of National Grid, US. “If we are going to reach net zero, we need to pick up speed on developing and adopting zero carbon energy technologies. We are particularly excited about advancing clean hydrogen, which we believe has the potential to fundamentally transform the energy industry and the future of heat.”
LCRI is jointly led by the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) and Gas Technology Institute (GTI). Joining the initiative is the latest step National Grid has taken to advance the potential of clean hydrogen as part of its Net Zero by 2050 Plan. In addition, National Grid recently helped secure $12.45 million in funding from the US Department of Energy (DOE) for six of their national laboratories to facilitate research and accelerate the potential of hydrogen blending. National Grid is proud to support this work. Additional research and development will be crucial to unlocking true potential of hydrogen as a clean source of energy that can serve multiple sectors of the economy including heat.
