Each year roughly 1.6 million students from over 22,000 high schools across America enter the National Merit Scholarship Program in the fall of their junior (third) year of high school by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) and meeting published participation requirements. The top 1.25% of test-takers become National Merit Semifinalists and roughly, 90% of the semifinalists become finalists. Every February, an estimated 15,000 National Merit Program Finalists are recognized and are eligible to receive National Merit Scholarship awards. Nearly half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship and earn the Merit Scholar® title.
Since 2018, ON Semiconductor has been proud to be one of the 220 corporate sponsors for the National Merit Scholarship Program. To date, there have been 16 children of ON Semiconductor employees (from Arizona, California, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island and Texas) who have received awards from our company program. Every National Merit® Scholarship Finalist who is a child of an ON Semiconductor employee is eligible for the award. The program recognizes and encourages academically talented students, fosters employment loyalty, initiates promising relationships and identifies potential candidates for internships and employment. Each National Merit® ON Semiconductor Scholarship recipient receives $2,000 per year, awarded on an annual basis for up to four years of college for students enrolled in an undergraduate program at any regionally accredited college or university in the U.S. that meets the National Merit Scholarship Corporation’s participation requirements. In addition, we’ve hosted luncheons at our headquarters with the parents, students and senior leadership to honor their accomplishments and extend our congratulations.
“I am very thankful for ON Semiconductor for awarding me a scholarship through the National Merit Scholarship Program. The scholarship has helped me attend the University of my choosing without worry of financial restraint or lack of resources. I am now attending the University of California, Los Angeles, studying Electrical Engineering, and just completed a summer internship at ON Semiconductor as an Applications Engineering Intern. The National Merit Scholarship Program has helped me prepare for the future and pursue a great higher education. The luncheon held at Phoenix headquarters for awarded students was also very motivating. Being recognized by the company and getting a look into the industry firsthand gave me a large boost of confidence entering college and helped push me to pursue a summer internship at ON Semiconductor.” Cameron Pickard, scholarship recipient and 2020 ON Semiconductor summer intern
