New Project Aims to Improve Fish Quality
A new project to improve fish quality for consumers and increase predictability was initiated by Marine Harvest Canada, a member of the BC Salmon Farmers Association. The Performance Evaluation Harvest (PEH) entails the collection of detailed data on salmon processed in their Port Hardy plant. This marked the first time the company has conducted a PEH, and over six days every harvest fish had records taken for weight, length, and physical condition, while also having DNA samples extracted. Information from this harvest fish database will be primarily used to determine future breeding parameters.
B.C. salmon farmers are established leaders in marine research, investing to learn more about fish and ocean health, and the environment in which we operate. The industry has engaged the top minds in B.C. and Canada to identify knowledge gaps and advance priority research projects, working with scientists, fisheries experts, fish health specialists, academics, conservationists, and government.
