Papa John's International: Better, Delivered
Papa John’s International recently released its latest Corporate Responsibility Highlights report, covering 2020 initiatives to advance the company’s ESG strategy and topics most important to the company and stakeholders.
Through its People, Pizza, Planet framework, Papa John’s is committed to delivering better for team members, franchisees, customers and shareholders. Named QSR Magazine’s Most Transformational Brand in 2020, the company is driven by a renewed focus on innovation across every facet of its business, from menu and products, to culture and community.
“2020 was a year unlike any other, as the world faced unprecedented challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Rob Lynch, President and CEO. “Throughout it all, Papa John’s team members and franchisees delivered, with hard work and an unrelenting commitment to our values. From delivering meals to healthcare workers, first responders and families, to supporting blood drives and the organizations on the frontlines, the Papa John’s family served more than one million meals to our neighbors in need.”
Highlights from the report include:
Supporting COVID-19 Relief and Recovery:
- Introduced No Contact Delivery to protect team members and customers, offering a limited-interaction food drop-off experience and online payment
- Provided $2.5 million in "hero pay" bonuses to 14,000 front-line team members in corporate restaurants and across the supply chain team
- Hired more than 30,000 employees, many of whom had been displaced from other jobs by the pandemic
Responding to Racial Injustice Challenges:
- Introduced a series of “Real Talks” to create space for employees to share perspectives and concerns about racial and social challenges
- President and CEO Rob Lynch joined the governing committee of the “CEO Action for Racial Equity,” a fellowship program for corporate leaders advancing racial equity through public policy
- Papa John’s African American Employee Resource Group and allies came together to support the Louisville community at a vigil hosted by Breonna Taylor’s family
Advancing Diversity, Equity & Inclusion:
- Achieved a 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2021 Corporate Equality Index
- Provided inclusive leadership training to strengthen the DE&I capabilities of senior leaders
- Achieved 100 percent employee completion of unconscious bias training, and made training available to franchise owners for use with their team members
Delivering for our Communities:
- Through the Shaq-a-Roni promotion, raised $3.6 million for the Papa John’s Foundation to support community partners, COVID-19 relief efforts and the fight against racial injustice
- Continued a national partnership with Boys and Girls Clubs of America to support youth development programs and the National Youth of the Year celebration
- Delivered 10,000 meals to underserved communities in partnership with World Central Kitchen
Integrating Environmental Sustainability:
- Collaborated with Food Donation Connection to deliver 246,000 surplus meals to local community organizations. Since 2010, 3.2 million meals have been donated, resulting in less food waste and more meals for people in need
- Diverted nearly 79,000 reusable dough trays from landfills – more than 237,000 pounds of waste – by recycling the trays when no longer fit for use
- Completed roll out of a new route optimization program across distribution centers, avoiding an average of 6,000 miles each week
