The Path Forward to a Next-Generation Health System
UnitedHealth Group is committed to leading in the development of a next-generation health system in a socially conscious way – a system that ensures every person has access to high-quality, affordable health care that meets their unique needs.
We believe a next-generation health system should build on the strengths of the current system, enable public-private partnerships and leverage private-sector innovation.
The Path Forward outlines UnitedHealth Group’s perspective on how to achieve a next-generation health system where every person has access to high-quality, affordable health care that meets their unique needs.
Our Policy Solutions
By implementing a series of actionable, practical and timely policy solutions, we can develop a modern, next-generation health system that will:
Achieve Universal Coverage
We believe that everyone should have access to affordable, high-quality health coverage – and we have advocated for policies to achieve universal coverage for more than 20 years. More than 28 million uninsured individuals can be covered by strengthening and modernizing existing coverage options that currently serve approximately 90% of Americans by:
- Expanding and strengthening Medicaid to cover more than 9 million additional individuals.
- Protecting Medicare Advantage by ensuring its stability.
- Enabling more choice in the individual market and modernizing the individual exchanges to cover nearly 19 million additional individuals.
Improve Health Care Affordability
We are focused on improving health care value with the goal of reducing health care cost trends to general inflation by:
- Eliminating surprise billing, saving $40 billion a year for consumers and employers.
- Accelerating value-based care models that reward wellness and improve health outcomes.
- Reducing consumer out-of-pocket costs by shifting care delivery to the most appropriate, efficient and lowest-cost sites of care.
Enhance the Health Care Experience
We are committed to creating a simpler, more transparent and more personal health care experience for consumers and physicians by:
- Offering tools and resources to help consumers make informed decisions about their health care.
- Simplifying and standardizing how physicians measure and track the quality of care, enabling them to spend more time focused on their patients.
- Investing in a diverse health care workforce, removing restrictions that prevent providers from delivering the highest level of care they are licensed to provide and expanding access to telehealth.
Drive Better Health Outcomes
We can achieve a health system that prioritizes preventive care and reduces the burden of disease by:
- Rewarding providers for delivering high-quality, cost-effective care.
- Taking a holistic approach to care delivery to prevent chronic disease and address health disparities.
- Improving the flow of health care data across the system and deploying tools and resources to improve health literacy.
