ATLANTA, Dec. 5, 2014 /3BL Media/ – Points of Light, the largest organization in the world dedicated to volunteer service, received a $1.2 million grant from The UPS Foundation, the charitable arm of UPS (NYSE:UPS). The grant will be used to mobilize volunteers worldwide to tackle some of society’s toughest issues.

The UPS Foundation grant will fund volunteer-based solutions to increase disaster preparedness and the capacity to respond to disasters, spur the international growth of volunteerism, engage veterans in volunteer service and provide service to veterans, and strengthen nonprofits to more effectively engage volunteers.

“Through its generous support of and long-time commitment to volunteerism, UPS has helped to drive peer learning and innovation in our sector, helping to create 21st century tools for 21rst century volunteers,” said Tracy Hoover, president of Points of Light. “I know I speak on behalf of millions of volunteers and thousands of nonprofits worldwide when I say we are so grateful for UPS’s critical support and partnership.”

Established in 1951 and based in Atlanta, Ga., The UPS Foundation identifies specific areas where its backing clearly impacts social issues. In support of this strategic approach, The UPS Foundation has identified the following focus areas for giving: encouraging diversity, promoting volunteerism and building capacity in the nonprofit sector, enhancing community safety through road-building and humanitarian relief, and supporting the environment with energy conservation and reforestation.

In 2013, The UPS Foundation invested 1.8 million volunteer hours and more than $100 million worldwide through grants that benefit organizations or programs such as Points of Light and provide support for building strong communities. This past June, UPS pledged that the company will complete 20 million hours of global volunteerism and community service by the end of 2020.

“The UPS Foundation has been working with Points of Light for more than a decade," said Eduardo Martinez, president of The UPS Foundation. "Our programs with Points of Light have built capacity to mobilize new and existing volunteers and increased engagement with communities, businesses and non-profit organizations in volunteer leadership. Together, we are paving the way for innovation, action and impact to make a difference around the world.”
