Raising Civic-Minded Children to Become Allied Adults as We Remember the Birmingham Bombing
OAKLAND, Calif., September 15, 2020 /3BL Media/ - “How can I help?” is a question we often utter when those around us are struggling – even suffering – and we’re actually feeling helpless. We want to do something immediately to make all the pain and discomfort go away, for them and for us. Times like these place us in these kinds of moments with memories of tragic violence, current racial unrest, thousands dying needlessly from a poorly managed pandemic – and our children adjusting to all kinds of varied scenarios for the 2020-2021 school year. “How can I help?”
As quoted in a recent Good Housekeeping article on how to raise good, civic-minded children, Laura Plato, Chief Solutions Officer for VolunteerMatch offers the following advice good for children and adults alike, “Volunteering exposes us to situations, points of view, and communities we might not normally encounter in the course of our daily lives. And that can help instill a sense of interconnectedness and empathy that becomes a through-line in our lives." Volunteering is the very tangible answer to this persistent question, an entrance to becoming a meaningful ally on the frontlines of struggle.
September 15, 2020 marks the 57th anniversary of four little girls losing their lives in the bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. As we continue to remember a more recent historic tragedy, 9/11, with new and renewed commitments to service, the work we offer on behalf of others not only helps in the moment, but it is an investment in a world that will be more just and equitable for our children. The best part of it all is that they are never too young to begin having a hand in making it so.
