(3BL Media) May 8, 2012 - Hydro-Québec is one of the leading electric utilities in North America and ranks among the world’s largest hydropower producers.
Key 2011 achievements highlighted in the Sustainability Report 2011:
- 98% of the electricity generated by Hydro-Québec was from renewable sources.
- Net power sales outside Québec replaced thermal output, preventing 12 million tonnes of CO2 emissions, the equivalent of the annual emissions produced by 3 million vehicles.
- Energy efficiency: new savings of 995 GWh, bringing the company closer to its 2015 target of 11 TWh in cumulative savings.
- Construction continued on the $6.5 billion Romaine hydropower complex, which is considered the largest infrastructure project in Canada. The facility will start generating electricity by 2014. Environmental follow-up will continue until 2040.
- Hydro-Québec purchased $103.7 million in goods and services from Aboriginal companies, organizations and independent workers.
- Rollout of Canada’s first electric vehicle public charging network. The Electric Circuit will have 120 240-volt charging stations installed in many of the partners’ parking lots.
- Hydro-Quebec’s share of the Quebec economy is around 4% of the gross domestic product (GDP), excluding construction activities, research and development and its subsidiaries’ operations.
For its tenth Sustainability Report, Hydro-Québec produced a self-declaration, checked by the GRI, corresponding to Application Level B+ of the Global Reporting Initiative’s G3 guidelines. Moreover, some of the data has been reviewed by an external firm.
