This year saw a return to strong growth and a commitment to increase investment in research and development (R&D) to create new sustainable technologies, including catalysts to improve air quality or resource efficiency and products that benefit health and wellbeing.

During 2010, the company carried out a review of its business strategy for the next ten years, which showed that sustainability is central to future growth and reconfirmed the importance of R&D in realising growth opportunities.

It is now three and a half years since Johnson Matthey embarked on its sustainability journey, known as Sustainability 2017. In February 2011, a detailed review of sustainability strategy was conducted. Progress was evaluated, priorities set and potential new markets for sustainability related products explored, however the fundamental strategy remains unchanged.

The Sustainability 2017 Vision is underpinned by seven targets which cover growth in earnings, carbon neutrality, waste, resource efficiency, health, safety and environmental management. The company is on track or progressing well with five out of the seven targets. However, business expansion this year has resulted in absolute increases in many of the company’s environmental performance indicators.  In most cases, these increases were below the rate of growth in the company’s sales, highlighting increased operational efficiency, partly as a result of the Sustainability 2017 initiative.

Grass roots support for sustainability across the group has provided a powerful impetus from the start, and this year was no different. Case studies show a range of achievements at a local level.
