(3BL Media) June 7, 2012 - Marking the fifth anniversary of its Plan A, Marks & Spencer today publishes its 2012 How We Do Business Report.
The report shows that 138 of the company’s 180 Plan A commitments have now been achieved including the key targets of carbon neutral operations, sending no waste to landfill, improving energy efficiency by 25%, sourcing 100% of wild fish from the most sustainable sources, developing new standards in ethical sourcing and helping customers to live healthier lifestyles.
Since 2007, the company has:
- Engaged 5 million customers in Plan A including the recently launched ‘shwopping’ campaign
- Worked with customers and employees to raise over £20m for charities
- Helped 5,000 unemployed people with its Marks & Start work experience programme.
- Cut annual absolute gross GHG emissions by 158,000 t CO2 (or 22%)
- Reduced total waste by 31% and food waste by 40%
- Avoided the use of 1.7billion carrier bags
- Provided 550,000 hours of training to suppliers
- Developed the UK’s Top 2 healthy eating brands
- Generated a net benefit of £185m
The report is independently assured by Ernst & Young using ISAE 3000 and AA1000AS and meets level B of GRI G3.1. Reporting of Greenhouse gas emissions is in accordance with the WBCSD/ WRI GHG Corporate Reporting Standard and a position of carbon neutral operations has been achieved in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol certified by The CarbonNeutral® Company and self-certified to PAS 2060.

The report also introduces M&S’s future approach to integrated reporting which builds on measurements such as the 31% of M&S products that now have a Plan A quality such as Fairtrade, sustainable raw materials, animal welfare or healthy food standards.
