The report, available at www.merckresponsibility.com, focuses on Merck's corporate responsibility activities, progress and performance during 2012 in four priority areas where the company is positioned to have a positive impact: Access to Health, Environmental Sustainability, Employees, and Ethics and Transparency.
Highlights from the 2012 report include:
- Expanding their product portfolio, as well as local development and distribution capacity, through important joint ventures
- Developing new partnerships to reduce maternal mortality through Merck for Mothers
- Celebrating 25 years of scientific discovery, visionary leadership and extraordinary commitment to advance the control of river blindness, or onchocerciasis, in sub-Saharan Africa, Latin America and Yemen
- Improving wastewater quality – specifically, chemical oxygen demand (COD) – by 57 percent, and nitrogen and phosphorus by 13 percent since 2009
- Achieving a 20 percent reduction in employee lost time injury rate
In addition, this year’s report provides information on Merck’s commitment to corporate responsibility within their Consumer Care and Animal Health businesses.
Merck uses several external guidelines and measurement frameworks to inform the scope of its reporting, including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI 3.1) Guidelines, the Millennium Development Goals, the Access to Medicine Index and the U.N. Global Compact.
