In 2011, Thomas Cook Group’s commitment to sustainability continued to grow in strength with the launch of its Group wide commitment to a sustainability vision and aims for 2020. Other highlights from the year include: • Becoming the first global tour operator to subscribe to the Travelife Sustainability System • Working closely with base airports to establish the necessary infrastructure to maximise in-flight waste recycling • Launching networks of sustainability and environmental champions across the Group to engage employees in sustainability • Creating a Group-wide Child Protection Policy • Supporting sustainability projects in holiday destinations, promoting conservation and animal welfare. • Significant reductions in energy use (8.5%) across the Group and maintaining its position as having the most efficient airlines in the sector by making a further 2.25% improvement in efficiency The 2011 report includes features called ‘Answers on a postcard’ exploring challenging sustainability questions with responses from the Thomas Cook Group as well as from industry experts. Questions include ‘Can tourism be sustainable?’ and ‘How can tourism not only safeguard but benefit destination communities?’ The report includes information on the Group’s sustainability strategy and refined material issues as well as its collaboration with various industry and sustainability organisations. The report is aligned with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) G3.1 Guidelines and achieves GRI-checked level B.
