Republic Services Commemorates Earth Day in Daly City with Expansion of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-Powered Fleet
DALY CITY, Calif., April 21, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Republic Services announced the unveiling of the new compressed natural gas (CNG) fueling station and the addition of 22 new CNG-powered trucks to serve customers of Daly City. The new CNG trucks replace older diesel-powered trucks in the Company’s fleet.
“We are dedicated to providing our customers with outstanding service while doing business in the most sustainable manner possible,” said Mike Mahoney, general manager at Republic Services. “We are leveraging alternative fuels and fleet innovation to help preserve our Blue Planet, and we believe we have a responsibility to lead by example, with a commitment to reduce carbon emissions whenever possible.”
Republic operates a total of 30 collection vehicles supporting Daly City, the Town of Colma and Open Market areas of San Mateo County. More than 80 percent of Republic’s fleet serving the area powered by the domestic natural gas fuel source. Clean Energy Fuels designed and built the CNG fueling station.
“Republic’s CNG program has demonstrated their leadership and commitment to the environment and our residents and businesses in Daly City,” said Daly City Mayor Glenn Sylvester. “We are proud to partner with them on converting their fleet to natural gas and building a CNG fueling station, which ties in perfectly with our City’s sustainability goals.”
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), each new CNG collection truck deployed is equivalent to planting over 600 mature trees each year. Based on EPA calculations, the carbon emissions reduction benefits from Republic’s CNG powered fleet in Daly City is equivalent to planting 13,200 mature trees annually.
Republic has 52 employees in the Daly City area who serve more than 25,000 households and over 1,200 commercial customers. Republic also owns and operates the Ox Mountain Landfill near Half Moon Bay and the Newby Island Recycling Center and Composting Facility in Milpitas.
Nationwide, Republic operates a fleet of more than 2,500 CNG vehicles and 38 natural gas fueling stations. Republic’s CNG fleet helps to save roughly 18 million gallons of diesel fuel annually. As the operator of the 8th largest vocational fleet in the country, Republic has a number of initiatives to reduce overall fuel usage, including its continued commitment to operating CNG powered trucks. Together, these initiatives will help Republic reach its goal of reducing fleet greenhouse gas emissions by three percent by 2018.
