Republic Services: Williams County Landfill Tour in Ohio
The Williams County Landfill, operated by Republic Services, hosted a tour this fall for the St. Patrick’s Catholic School First Lego League of Bryan, Ohio. The First Lego League is an international program created to introduce children to science and technology. This year’s FLL challenge is the Trash Trek Challenge. The children are challenged to explore one piece of trash from start to finish. They are then asked to identify a problem in the way the trash is handled, and then come up with a solution.
The students asked John Bolyard, Republic Services landfill operations manager, questions about how the landfill handles the trash, how much waste is taken in daily and what is allowed in the landfill. From the scale to the working face, the children watched the landfill working procedures. Mr. Bolyard also explained the standards and safety rules that must be followed at all times, including the OEPA rules, and how a cell is built.
In November, John Bolyard along with Melissa Bowers, Republic’s gate attendant and landfill administrator, were invited to a practice presentation by the First Lego League at St. Patrick’s Catholic School. The teams will be competing in their first tournament in December in Sylvania, Ohio. Republic Services wishes all the teams the best of luck.
