Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation Gives Kids a Head Start in the Garden
Foundation recognizes 2019 Gro More Good Garden Grantees with National Head Start Association
Ten Head Start programs across the country will soon be growing something greater this spring thanks to a grant from The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation and National Head Start Association. These ten Head Start programs were awarded monetary funds, product donations and garden kits, along with garden training and curriculum, to build or expand garden programs for their preschool students.
Through its partnership, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation and National Head Start Association are working together to combat some of the most pressing challenges facing today’s youngest generation, improving access to healthy food and increasing time spent outdoors connected to nature. The three-year partnership aims to create more edible gardens and hands-on learning experiences for young children and their families.
The 2019 Gro More Good Garden Grantees include:
- How to Gro Hydro––Arkansas Early Learning in Jonesboro, Arkansas
- CCCC Head Start Children’s Garden––Cankdeska Cikana Community College Head Start in Fort Totten, North Dakota
- Garden at Helen’s Place––Family Building Blocks in Salem, Oregon
- Choices Veggie & Flower Garden––Southeast Kansas Community Action Program in Pittsburg, Kansas
- Little Green Thumbs––Glen Cove Child Day Care Center in Glen Cove, New York
- Lafayette Community Garden––PEACE Head Start program in Syracuse, New York
- St. Matthew’s Head Start Garden––Greater Erie Community Action Committee in Erie, Pennsylvania
- Harmony Children’s Learning Garden––Parent Child Incorporated in San Antonio, Texas
- Head Start Community Garden––Ashtabula County Community Action Agency Head Start, Ashtabula, Ohio
- Little Sprouts––Blue Water Community Action, Port Huron, Michigan
In addition to these grantees, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Foundation is working with National Head Start Association and KidsGardening.org to provide more hands-on garden education––such as webinars, workshops and resources––to enable any Head Start across the country to start a garden program. This is part of ScottsMiracle-Gro’s Gro More Good initiative to connect 10 million children to the benefits of gardens and greenspaces by 2023.
