ScottsMiracle-Gro Sales Team Helps Nurture New Victory Garden for Veterans
By Stephen Carboneau, regional vice president, ScottsMiracle-Gro
Members of our ScottsMiracle-Gro Northeast Sales Team were honored to work recently with The Home Depot to bring a new Victory Garden for Veterans to the Camp Salute Affordable Housing Project in Southern New Jersey. Camp Salute is a joint venture between the People for People Foundation of Gloucester County and Conifer Realty LLC to provide permanent housing for low- to moderate-income families with a veteran preference. It is the first and only community in the U.S. to provide permanent housing to veterans, their families and surviving spouses of veterans.
The goal was to build a park in the back of the housing development to offer veterans an area to relax, garden and plant their own vegetables. ScottsMiracle-Gro donated a full truckload of mulch, topsoil, lawn soil, potting mix and garden soil for planting numerous raised bed gardens and ornamental beds throughout the park. In addition, we provided grass seed and fertilizer that we used to plant a fenced-in grassy area where veterans can take their dogs to get some exercise. We also contributed a monetary grant of $5,000 to help bring the project to fruition.
Members of our sales team joined with approximately 100 Home Depot volunteers to donate time, energy and efforts to plant the garden. Our hope is that the Victory Garden will bring peace, healing and relaxation to Camp Salute veterans for years to come.
