ON Semiconductor Celebrates the Magic of Family Volunteering
by Jackie Terry, CSR Program Manager
In 2018, ON Semiconductor donated over $2 million globally to support health, human services, education, disaster relief and environmental causes. Of that total, we have invested close to $1 million in Arizona through workplace giving (such as matching donations and sponsorships).
To increase our impact on communities, we launched a formal employee volunteer program in 2017 so that all of our employees in North America (U.S. and Canada) have one day per year to volunteer at an organization of their liking during company time.
In addition, ON Semiconductor offers volunteering activities that are company-sponsored activity and are organized for our employees on weekdays or weekends. And in 2018, we introduced a dollars-for-doers program for employees in North America. Last year, our employees located at the corporate office in Phoenix, logged 1,250 volunteer hours alone!
Today, we recognize Family Volunteer Day a day early (11/23) - a global day of service that celebrates the power of families who work together to support their communities and neighborhoods. This volunteering holiday is powered by generationOn, the youth division of Points of Light, and sponsored by The Walt Disney Company.
As we highlight this annual day of service and celebrate the magic of family volunteering, we wanted to showcase the great work that our Phoenix site’s Employee Activities Committee (EAC), an employee affinity group. For the past several years, this employee network at ON Semiconductor has built a partnership with the St. Mary’s Food Bank. This organization serves to alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy and education.
St. Mary’s Food Bank is a community-based organization, serving nine of Arizona’s 15 counties by distributing food to nearly 700 nonprofits partners. These agencies include food pantries, dining halls, homeless shelters, etc. as two-million Arizonans are faced with a lack of consistent access to adequate food every year.
On the second Saturday of every month, the EAC organizes a special volunteer event with St. Mary's Food Bank as volunteers are the backbone of this agency and they rely on the amazing community support to enable them to distribute 250,000 meals daily, six days a week. ON Semiconductor employees are invited to help pack emergency food boxes and family and friends are always welcome (children must be eight years of age or older).
Over the past eleven months, from January through November 2019, these volunteer activities have brought 259 individuals to volunteer and the results to help end hunger in our Phoenix community have been outstanding:
- Total volunteer hours: 777
- Food boxes packed: 10,206 – NOTE: each food box feeds a family of 4-6 people, which equates to feeding 40,824 people so far this year!
- Pounds of food: 270,054
“I am very proud to work for a company and with individuals that work so hard to give back to our community! It touches my heart to see the dedication of our team. There are many that plan their activities around this volunteer event because it is so important to them to make a difference,” said Bonnie Faulkinbury, Facilities Manager at ON Semiconductor in Phoenix and the local EAC’s coordinator of these monthly activities.
This weekend is another great way to be inspired by the power of helping others so be sure to bring your family together to make your mark on the world!
