The ON Semiconductor Foundation Donates to the 'Hope On for the Elderly Living Alone' Project in Partnership With the Bucheondong Community Welfare Center in South Korea

On February 16, the Bucheondong Community Welfare Center celebrated receiving a grant from the ON Semiconductor Foundation to support a social network for the elderly living alone with a donation ceremony.

The ON Semiconductor Foundation is the nonprofit arm of ON Semiconductor, a leading supplier of semiconductor-based solutions, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, who operates ON Semiconductor Korea in Bucheon.

The ON Semiconductor Foundation, the Bucheondong Community Welfare Center and the Bucheon Volunteer Center unveiled the ‘Hope On for the Elderly Living Alone’ project, with the goal of helping the elderly living alone form social relationships and support a happy life. The project that currently runs through 2023 is supposed to help seniors establish relationships with neighbors as they face challenges due to COVID-19 and the social issue of loneliness of the elderly in general.

The ‘Hope On for the Elderly Living Alone’ project supports the distribution of hearing aids as well as installing LED lights and care plugs for seniors living alone as a result of the funding it received from the ON Semiconductor Foundation. The first phase of this project will reinforce the social network for the elderly living alone and these items are expected to satisfy their physiological and safety needs. Hearing aids will be provided to those who have difficulty hearing. Newly installed LED lights and care plugs will assist with monophobia, the fear of being alone, providing a bright and safe environment for the elderly. In addition, employees of ON Semiconductor Korea will participate in future activities to expand the social network of the elderly living alone.

“Through this project, it is our hope that the elderly living alone in this region will be able to strengthen their relationships with neighbors thus making their lives much happier,” said Rich Kim, grant advisor for the ON Semiconductor Foundation. “We will also participate in volunteer work by having our employees participate in the LED lighting replacement work in the future.”

“I would like to thank the ON Semiconductor Foundation for supporting the elderly living alone even in difficult times of COVID-19,” said Kwon Hyeok-cheol, head of the Bucheondong Community Welfare Center. “With this program, we will be able to provide customized services to elderly living alone such as LED lamps operated by remote control and remote-controlled door locks to make their lives safer and more convenient. Not only that, but I am also grateful that by installing “care plugs,” we can establish a system that can quickly respond to emergency situations in elderly families living alone.”

The ON Semiconductor Foundation was established in February 2019 and became a nonprofit organization formed under the laws of the State of Arizona in January 2020, in an effort to continue the legacy of giving and volunteering in the communities where it does business and where its employees live. Its primary focus of giving is in the areas of science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) education, health, disaster relief, the environment and human services. 

The Bucheondong Community Welfare Center serves the elderly population in Bucheon, South Korea, with aims to improve the quality of life for the elderly living alone.
