ON Semiconductor Holds First CSR Day

ON Semiconductor takes pride in how we have integrated corporate social responsibility (CSR) into our culture and business operations around the world. To showcase and educate employees on local and global efforts, we held our first-ever CSR day during our annual Responsibility Week in early November, with CSR activities taking place around the world.
 
We also encouraged employees to take a “CSR Pledge,” which raised awareness about the environment and/or better helped their local communities. The pledge was a simple action the employees could commit to donating to a local charity (and getting a company match), using public transportation, biking or vanpool to work, eliminating single-use plastics for the day, etc.

Almost 900 employees – representing 70 locations – submitted their pledges via an online survey. And as a token of our company’s appreciation for their participation, we held a special drawing, where ON Semiconductor made a donation to an organization of the winner’s choice, as in compliance with their Global Corporate Giving Program policy. Ten winners were selected randomly and here are the organizations the winning employees selected:

Also, here is a snapshot of the “pledge” commitments from our employees:

• 83% pledged to turn off appliances and lights when not in use
• 70% pledged to put litter in its place by picking up any trash and properly disposing of it
• 67% pledged to say no to single-use plastics such as straws, cups or eating utensils
• 67% pledged to say no to plastic bags and use reusable bags
• 52% pledged to try to be paper-free for one day 
• 50% pledged to choose food that is locally sourced

In addition, locations around the globe organized company-sponsored CSR activities during 2019 Responsibility Week for employees to take part in. Some of the sites with planned events are highlighted below:

• Nampa, Idaho (USA) site helps The Idaho Foodbank provide 11,000 meals

The Idaho Foodbank, the largest food bank and distributor of free food assistance in Idaho, holds a yearly Empty Bowls event the Friday after Thanksgiving. Ceramic bowls, decorated by local artisans, are sold at the plaza surrounding the Boise Christmas tree. These particular bowls don’t remain empty for long, as soup donated by local restaurants can also be purchased. Purchasing these bowls also helps fill the bowls of others. Each bowl sold helps The Idaho Foodbank provide at least 50 meals.

This year, ON Semiconductor in Nampa, donated over 200 bowls to the event. Members of the Nampa team applied their artistic talents to decorating the bowls – and some members were quite artistic! 

“We wanted a way to involve our employees directly in supporting The Idaho Foodbank. Painting the bowls on-site allowed everyone a chance to participate,” said Greg Humpherys, Senior Manufacturing Manager at ON Semiconductor in Nampa.

With help from local studio A Way with Clay, the local conference room was turned into a ceramics studio. The room was set-up with boxes of bowls, an array of paints and brushes and worktables. Throughout the day, employees stopped by to decorate the bowls. When the bowls were all painted, A Way with Clay picked up the results and fired them in their kiln.

• ON Semiconductor Malaysia site collaborated with the Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia

In conjunction with Pink October month, ON Semiconductor’s three locations in Malaysia collaborated with Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia (BCWA), a nonprofit that assists with peer support for women with breast cancer, and held a three-day event. These activities at each of our Malaysian sites raised awareness and educated employees about breast cancer. 

To kick things off, BCWA’s President, Ranjit Kaur, conducted an educational talk, which covered breast cancer facts and figures, early detection, medical and psychosocial help, as well as, shared support group information and what the role of family members looks like. A practical session by BCWA’s senior nurse educators also took place around being ‘breast aware’ and breast self-examinations were available.

The events were a big success - female employees took advantage of the complimentary clinical breast examinations, and at the same time, both men and women had the opportunity to learn more about breast cancer. 
“It was great meeting your team! I could see the enthusiasm and interest among your staff who listened attentively and asked questions,” said Ranjit Kaur, Breast Cancer Welfare Association Malaysia’s President.

We are proud of all the employees at ON Semiconductor and so glad to support these important community initiatives. We believe that investing in the areas where we live, by giving of our time, treasure and talent, is a plus for both our local communities and the company.
