TransCanada and Ohio employee honoured by Department of Defence for strong military support
Strong military support recognized
It takes plenty of commitment and dedication to manage the scheduling of two jobs. But for Dwight Henry his work at TransCanada hasn’t impacted his ability to serve and support the military.
"TransCanada allows for 18 days of military leave and that covers the majority of the annual training period," says Henry, an electronics, instrumentation and controls technician at TransCanada’s Sulphur Springs compressor station in Indiana. "I'm thankful. While some employers make the reservists use vacation time to cover their time spent serving, TransCanada does not."
Henry has served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years as a Machinist First Class. Although he began working at TransCanada eight years ago, it hasn't impacted his ability to serve and support the United States military.
"Even though my military service causes an undue hardship on both scheduling and my co-workers, I have never heard a single negative word from anyone.
"Everyone supports my military service completely," he adds.
Thankful for flexibility and support
That "everyone" includes his manager, Stoney Sportsman, who is based in Defiance, Ohio.
Because of the support he’s received, Henry wanted to show his thanks to TransCanada and especially his manager – so Henry nominated him for an award with the U.S. Department of Defense.
The nomination resulted in TransCanada earning one of 75 Patriot Awards given out in the state of Ohio. The Patriot Award reflects the efforts made to support Citizen Warriors through a wide-range of measures including flexible schedules, time off prior to and after deployment, caring for families and granting leaves of absence if needed. The award was recently presented to Sportsman, publically recognizing him for the outstanding support and cooperation to employees who are serving in the military.
