Suzano 2020 Report: Renewing Life Inspired by Trees

May 19, 2021 5:00 AM ET

Suzano is a Brazilian company and a global reference in developing sustainable and innovative solutions from renewable sources. It is the world's leading producer of eucalyptus pulp and one of Latin America’s largest paper producers, the corporation, through its products, plays a part in the lives of over two billion people.

2020 was challenging for everyone. Suzano’s Annual Report shares how the company was able to deal with this uncertain moment in our history, caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, being able to simultaneously keep the business up and running, its employees and families safe, and helping the Brazilian authorities to minimize the impacts of this urgent matter.

Suzano understands that its role as a leader in the pulp and paper sector is to help society find solutions to its structural issues. Due to this Suzano committed to ambitious long-term goals for 2030. The goals also address topics of global interest and are connected to the company’s business strategy, such as climate change, poverty reduction, and alternatives to non-renewables products, contributing to the low-carbon economy.

In 2020, the company also announced its corporate purpose. From the trees Suzano learned that life always renews itself. And that, with them, we can create a sustainable future for life on Earth. It is our duty to drive this movement of regenerating, oxygenating and renewing our planet to build a better tomorrow for all.

“Renewing life inspired by trees. This purpose drives us forward, moves, and places us as part of the solution to the challenges faced by society. In 2021, we will continue this journey of renewal. May it be a year of learning and of great achievements”, says Walter Schalka, CEO of Suzano.

Highlights
This year, reflecting best practices in transparency and taking into considerations feedback from our stakeholders, we worked towards an improvement in our Indicator Center, which now covers more than over 430 indicators (almost double when compared to the last publication). In addition to the already traditional content, we now have new pages dedicated to: Climate Change, SASB indicators, metrics from stakeholder capitalism proposed by the World Economic Forum and relevant information about our financial operations supported by socio-environmental performance. We also evolved in reporting related to TCFD and long-term goals and created the function of exporting all the information contained in the Indicator Centre into a single PDF file thus facilitating search.

This is the first report in which Suzano presents the progress in performance of each of the long-term goals and the governance model for the commitments. And, to build the narrative of the evolution of our actions and results, we created sections according to their relevance and the impacts generated for a specific audience: employee, customer, supplier, investor, government, and civil society and community. Themes that generally interests more than one stakeholder are dealt cross-sectionally and may appear in more than one section from the perspective of the reader in question.

About the Report
Suzano’s 2020 Annual Report is available on a full online hot site and PDF edition. This year we also count with a Value Generation Model Infographic in which is possible to know the inputs and outputs of the company’s business in an instructive and summarized manner. As highlighted above, we maintained and updated the Indicators Center, our interactive platform with quantitative and qualitative data on the company's operations and impacts. The tool facilitates access to information that meets institutional, and market demands with quality and transparency.

In the platform, there are over 430 indicators of social, environmental, and economic performance found by categories: Material Themes; Global Reporting Initiative (GRI); Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB); metrics from stakeholder capitalism (proposed by the WEF); Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs); Long-Term Goals; Climate Change; Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

In addition, it is possible to access other main indicators related to the business performance and its value chain.

The 2020 Annual Report follows the guidelines of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and is inspired by the principles of the International Integrated Reporting Council (IIRC) and uses the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) as a reference. The whole content has undergone external assurance by Bureau Veritas and by an external reader, Tassio Azevedo, coordinator of the Greenhouse Gas Emissions Estimation System of the Climate Observatory (SEEG) and of the Annual Mapping of Land Cover and Use in Brazil (MapBiomas).
