Tetra Tech Employees Teach High School Students about their Local Environment
As part of Tetra Tech’s 50th Anniversary, Tetra Tech employees from around the globe have been participating in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) events. On May 31, 2016, Tetra Tech staff from our Whitehorse, Yukon, office participated in their local Whitehorse Envirothon for 100 high school students from around the area. This challenge for high school students, ranging from 10th to 12th grade, featured mock scenarios for the students to analyze.
The students assessed two undisturbed areas that were being considered for residential subdivision development. They evaluated water quality for drinking water, subsurface soil conditions for the foundations, and impacts to surrounding wildlife. Our employees taught the students about water quality and subsurface soil investigation. They also provided insight on what kinds of studies the City of Whitehorse has to conduct prior to developing a new residential subdivision. Following their examination of both sites, the students had to select their preferred development location.
