Together for Safer Roads, Republic Services and other TSR Member Companies Celebrate World Day for Safety and Health at Work

PHOENIX, April 28, 2017 /3BL Media/ – Between 25 and 33 percent of global crashes are work-related and 36 percent of occupational deaths worldwide are due to road crashes. As of 2010, there were more than 307 million commercial vehicles on the world’s roads. Companies have the responsibility to consider the welfare of their employees, as well as the dangers business fleets pose to other road users.

As a coalition of private sector companies, Together for Safer Roads (TSR) understands the massive financial, legal, reputational and social implications road traffic crashes have on corporate entities. It also recognizes that people – employees, contractors, and partners – are a company’s greatest asset, and the private sector must create a culture of safety.

As leaders of global companies, the private sector believes that it is time for more assertive action on road safety, which includes educating millions of employees, contractors, and partners worldwide. The private sector is known for its innovative spirit, creative thinking, and nimbleness in approaching challenges. Every company has a responsibility to bring this philosophy to road safety.

Celebrating World Day for Safety and Health at Work, which is April 28, provides businesses the opportunity to do just that. It also provides the opportunity to share and advance best practices for developing and managing transportation programs with the broader global private sector.

Through the Advancing Road Safety Best Practices for Companies and Their Fleets: Guidelines for Using Technology to Address Road Safety Challenges report, TSR has brought together its members’ best practice processes and guidelines to address how to use technologies to improve road safety management, safer roads and mobility, safer vehicles, safer road users, and post-crash response in private-sector settings.

By using the latest technologies, the private sector can make a significant impact on ensuring their operations, fleets, and drivers are safe during transport. With these guidelines, TSR aims to support companies with the transition to best practices, allowing collaboration towards a united objective – a world where roads are safer for all people. Highlights include:

1. Fleet drivers have an increased crash risk compared to privately registered vehicles. Companies must have leadership’s full commitment, a road safety management team in place, and an evidence-based action plan to help reduce road-related risks due to roads and mobility, vehicles, road users and post-crash response.

2. With road safety challenges, come technology solutions – that need to be assessed before implementation. A range of technologies, such as vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) technologies, can help a driver prepare, navigate and monitor road safety indicators. However, it is imperative for a company to deploy technologies that align with the challenges their employees face daily.

3. Road safety technologies are only as successful as the attitudes and behaviors of the road users employing them. A company must support its employees and contractors by training them on a reoccurring basis on how to use the technologies, as well as educating them on the safest road behaviors.
