UNITED NATIONS, N.Y., June 20, 2019 /3BL Media/— The United Nations Global Compact will next week launch a series of events to accelerate progress on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the national level.
Organized as part of the UN’s Making Global Goals Local Business campaign, these events will offer an opportunity for private sector leaders to share best practices and learn from others operating in the same business environment.
“We know that the only way to truly make the Global Goals a reality by 2030 is to focus on collaboration and impact on the ground,” said Lise Kingo, CEO & Executive Director of the UN Global Compact. “By taking conversations from the global to the national level, these Making Global Goals Local Business events will focus on how global strategies translate into local solutions to help achieve the Goals.”
To be kicked off by Global Compact Network UK on 24 June in London, the series will also feature events later this year in Canada, Indonesia, Lebanon, Mexico, Sri Lanka (co-hosted with Bangladesh, India, Nepal and Pakistan) and Tanzania (co-hosted with Kenya). Each event will be organized by a Global Compact Local Network. Collectively, these events will be an opportunity for the private sector to play a leading role in advancing the Global Goals in order to deliver on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
In the UK, the focus will be on solutions to finance the SDGs, with speakers including Lise Kingo, Sir Mark Moody-Stuart, Chairman of the Foundation for the Global Compact and Paul Simpson, CEO of CDP, along with business leaders from BT, Hermes Investment, HSBC, Unilever and several other companies.
Alongside the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York this July, the UN Global Compact will host Making Global Goals Local Business Week to provide a unique opportunity for business leaders to showcase national and local contributions to the Global Goals at the UN Headquarters. The week will bring together representatives from nearly all 70 Global Compact Local Networks around the world, alongside the Global Compact Expert Network, UN Resident Coordinators and other global leaders from civil society, Government, and the UN.
