Boeing's South Carolina facility is changing the way aircraft are built, with advanced production techniques and sending zero waste to landfills
Boeing recently launched the latest video - Factory for the future - in its Innovation series highlighting employees' ingenuity and passion for developing innovations that help to solve difficult, real-world problems.
Summary:
Eight football fields. That’s the approximate spread of the new solar panels atop Boeing’s 787 fabrication and assembly facility in North Charleston, South Carolina. This massive installment, comprised of 18,095 panels, provides up to 2.6 megawatts of electrical power for the site. And that’s just the beginning.The LEED-certified facility has also achieved Zero Waste to Landfill (ZWTL) status, which means none of the non-hazardous waste from the facility is ever sent to landfill. It’s the fourth Boeing site to achieve ZWTL status and like the others, it operates under a core set of principles known as the Five Rs: recycle, recover, re-use, reduce, and refuse or return. Each of which influence everything from energy efficiency to the type of packages the facility will and will not accept and more.
The video features Hope Gonzalez, an environmental specialist at Boeing South Carolina, who describes how Boeing is changing the way commercial jetliners are built, using an environmentally efficient factory building with systems that use less electricity, water and other resources.
