Vistra Donates More Than $250,000 to Food Banks as Pandemic's Hunger Crisis Deepens
IRVING, Texas, October 7, 2020 /3BL Media/ - Vistra (NYSE: VST) today announced the culmination of company-wide involvement in Hunger Action Month, resulting in more than $250,000 in donations to food banks in communities where it operates. The company understands that the number of Americans experiencing hunger continues to surge with the ongoing pandemic. This grim reality is confirmed by new research from Northwestern University, which says food insecurity has now doubled from before the pandemic.
“In the span of just six months, we’ve seen families hit hard by the economic blows of COVID-19, leaving many to rely on community food banks for their next meal,” said Curt Morgan, president and CEO of Vistra. “During this time, our company is committed to being part of the solution. Vistra is proud to partner with the food banks that are working tirelessly, and under increased pressure, to meet unprecedented need in our communties.”
“Nearly 50% of clients we’ve served since the pandemic struck had never used a food bank before, and never thought they would,” said Stephen J.C. Raeside, executive vice president of development at the Tarrant Area Food Bank. “Vistra’s sustained partnership through this unprecedented period has been crucial in helping us scale up to meet soaring need.”
This September, Vistra distributed more than $250,000 in Hunger Action Month donations through its family of brands in the communities where the company operates and serves customers:
- TXU Energy: $100,000 is directly supporting nearly a dozen food banks across Texas, including the North Texas Food Bank, Tarrant Area Food Bank, and Houston Food Bank
- Dynegy: $105,000 is supporting the Greater Chicago Food Depository, five food banks in Ohio, and food banks across Pennsylvania
- Homefield Energy: $20,000 is supporting food banks working to meet demand in central and southern Illinois communities
- Ambit Energy: Ambit Cares, Ambit Energy’s nonprofit organization dedicated to fighting hunger, set a new fundraising event record by raising more than $32,000 for Feeding America® as part of national Hunger Action Month during the company’s annual conference, AMBITION 2020
In total, 25 food banks and non-profits received funding through Vistra’s commitment to Hunger Action Month and its pledge to support the communities it serves during the ongoing pandemic.
