VolunteerMatch Announces April's Match Studio Collaborative Artist: DJ Agana
OAKLAND, Calif., April 8, 2021 /3BL Media/ – VolunteerMatch, the largest nonprofit network on the web connecting volunteers with opportunities to give back, announces its Match Studio Collaborative April artist, DJ Agana, spotlighting art as activism in celebration of Earth Month and National Volunteer Week.
Designed to highlight the role of art as advocacy, and advocacy and activism as two key expressions of modern volunteerism, the Collaborative provides a forum for artists of color to produce work that is then reproduced in highly accessible formats to fundraise towards a meaningful cause of each featured artist’s choice.
Rooted in her Latinx identity of Venezuelan descent, hailing from the San Francisco Bay Area, DJ Agana is an internationally acclaimed multi-dimensional contemporary artist converging traditional large scale murals and contemporary street art by painting prolific imagery encompassing black liberation, women's empowerment, racial and environmental justice.
DJ Agana’s work combines two great passions: graffiti art and environmental advocacy. The piece is vibrant with colorful leaves, ferns, and flowers bunched together in an afro-like bouquet. Mother Nature — a beautiful face with a disarming expression — looks out from underneath.
“VolunteerMatch is honored to showcase the artistry of DJ Agana. Through her work, she beautifully inspires us to be of service in April during Earth Month through her powerful words: Defending the earth is a love language. We are also excited to hear more about how her artistic expression drives action as she joins our educational series as a member of our Art as Activism: The Creative Call to Action panel this month alongside other activist artists during National Volunteer Week,” said Laura Plato, Chief Solutions Officer at VolunteerMatch.
She has chosen Few and Far Women as the recipient of funds for her original Match Studio Collaborative work. The organization is an assemblage of women who beautify the streets. In a shared commitment to creativity, education, and social justice, they draw, paint, skateboard, and teach all over the globe.
The Collaborative continues the call for independent artists passionate about social justice causes wishing to apply. Featured artists will be announced each month in 2021.
Thanks to private philanthropic support, each featured artist is eligible to receive a stipend of between $500 and $1000 to help with the development of their original work produced through the Collaborative in 2021. Projects typically include a combination of original visual art, video, live spoken word, music and performance events and are reproduced and made available as fundraisers through VolunteerMatch’s online channels.
