VolunteerMatch Makes It Easy for Americans to Have a Meaningful MLK Day of Service
(3BLMedia/theCSRfeed) January 15, 2010 - A year out from the largest event in U.S. volunteerism history, VolunteerMatch is again preparing to help tens of thousands of volunteers find meaningful ways to get involved on the MLK Day of Service.
On Monday, January 18, individuals and organizations will come together to volunteer, honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who never stopped asking the question, “What are you doing for others?”
Last year’s event took place just one day before the inauguration of President Barack Obama, who has made voluntary service a cornerstone of his term. With the historic election of the nation’s first African-American President serving as backdrop, more than a million people of all ages took part in service projects – the largest single-day turnout ever.
As the Web's most popular resource for volunteers, VolunteerMatch.org makes it easy for Americans of all ages to find meaningful MLK Day of Service activities by ZIP code, city, or interest area. Since its launch in 1998, the service has grown to support a social network of over three million civic-minded members including employees, customers and students at some of America's most recognized businesses and institutions.
This year VolunteerMatch has added a new entry point to its Web service, located at www.volunteermatch.org/seasonsofservice/mlkday, listing more than 600 MLK Day of Service-related volunteer opportunities, as well as links and resources for volunteer organizations looking to recruit from the VolunteerMatch network of volunteers. Popular projects include taking part in marches, wildlife restoration, stocking food pantries, helping to host community events, and producing arts and crafts projects for at-risk neighbors.
