Austin Hull arrived at Apple Tree Children’s Center in downtown Iowa City one morning last week with the mission to save some young eyes by screening children early for potential sight problems.
The procedure is simple but effective, plus free to parents. Most of the testing is performed by hundreds of trained community volunteers like Hull at various screening sites throughout the state.
“The last time we performed a screening, we found a child who was legally blind and nobody knew about it,” the young Iowa City resident said. “The screening may be fairly simple, but the results can be very, very important.”
