What's Your Green Carrot Stick?

In our personal sustainability consulting, we are often approached by clients wanting to incorporate sustainability concepts into their daily living. For some, this desire is sparked by a growth in eco awareness and a desire to engage in a particular sustainability concept. But not everyone is driven by these same personal passions.
So what factors drive behavior and do these factors change or become restricted to a ‘green’ subset in the context of sustainable lifestyle choices? Our personal consulting experience has taught us that people have a natural tendency to gravitate towards personal interests. However, we still encounter individuals who believe that personal sustainability is limited to only those with a passion for the concepts, that an interest in other things somehow excludes them from the benefits of sustainability. So how can this seemingly larger group become engaged? The answer lies in the alignment of personal incentives.
