Whirlpool Corporation and Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity Partner with the Scheidt Family to Build a Home in Cedar Rapids, Iowa
Bloomington, IN, December 18, 2012 /3BL Media/ PRNewswire/ — Whirlpool Corporation (NYSE:WHR) and Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity have completed construction on the home built in partnership with the Scheidt family, dedicating the house in a ceremony that took place October 15. The partners helped build the home as part of the 2012 Whirlpool-sponsored Habitat builds, which are taking place in Whirlpool communities throughout the country.
The house is located at 1009 H Ave NW, in the Northwestern quadrant of Cedar Rapids. For Carol Scheidt, the move means living in a safer neighborhood, in a home with fewer steps to navigate, and other accommodations to help her live comfortably despite her Multiple Sclerosis.
"Whirlpool Corporation has been an outstanding partner over the years, helping to transform the lives of families through its sponsorship and the work of its volunteers," said Jeff Capps, Executive Director of Cedar Valley Habitat for Humanity. "Seeing this finished home, and knowing the impact it will have on the Scheidts, has had such a positive impact on all of us and the entire community."
The Scheidts have volunteered more than 300 hours of their time at the Habitat for Humanity Restore and on build sites to achieve their goal of home ownership, something Carol wasn’t sure she would ever accomplish. Carol also works full time for IKON.
“I was concerned with my disability, but Habitat came on board and made everything I need come true,” said Carol Scheidt. “It’s amazing how fast this came together and all the hard work from the volunteers. Without your support, this would not be possible.”
Whirlpool Corporation has been a partner of Habitat for Humanity International for 12 years, supporting Habitat’s work in 240 countries and sponsoring more than 100 homes since the partnership began in 1999. In that time, the company has donated a range andENERGY STAR qualified refrigerator to every Habitat home in the U.S. and Canada, totaling more than 140,000 appliances. Whirlpool also supports and participates in the annual Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Work Project and is the first corporation to provide on-going donations to Habitat for Humanity ReStore resale outlets, helping to raise an additional $4.6 million for the organization.
