Women Scientists Lauded by Elsevier Foundation and OWSD in Kuala Lumpur

(3BL Media / theCSRfeed) December 12, 2011 - “Over the years I came to recognize that it is difficult for women to do science since they have to juggle their career, marriage, motherhood and other social obligations.” Those were the words of Lubna Tahtamoouni, a cancer researcher at Hashemite University in Jordan. Lubna was one of 10 women from Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean who traveled to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to accept their Elsevier Foundation/OWSD awards for research excellence on September 29th. Launched in 2010, the awards were developed by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) in collaboration with TWAS (the academy of sciences for the developing world) and the Elsevier Foundation.

“Winning such an award made me more confident about my decision of pursuing a career in science,” Lubna wrote in an email to the Elsevier Foundation. “Women need recognition, especially young women to give them that ‘head start’ and confidence.
