Nearly half of the global population is exposed to malaria, the most deadly parasitic disease in the world. According to the World Health Organization, the disease was responsible for 584,000 deaths in 20131. Every minute in Africa, a child dies of malaria.

World Malaria Day, celebrated on April 25th this year, was first instituted by WHO Member States during the World Health Assembly of 2007. It is an occasion to highlight the need for continued investment and sustained political commitment for malaria prevention and control.

Since 2008, through the program “Schoolchildren against Malaria,” Sanofi has been providing African teachers with a range of edutainment tools (MOSKI-KIT) and organizing theater competitions to educate children about the disease, and to help change behaviors.

This year, in partnership with the Ministry of Health’s National Malaria Control Program, Sanofi has deployed an extensive awareness campaign in Niger, involving primary school teachers, community health workers and more than 5,000 “peer educator” students to raise awareness with more than 100,000 community members.

The program “Schoolchildren against Malaria” has already reached more than 7.7 million children in over 15 African countries.

With key local partners, Sanofi has been involved for more than 10 years in a comprehensive approach to fight malaria, which includes innovative research and development to meet future needs, preferential pricing policies to make medicines affordable and the implementation of information, training and education programs.
