Xylem Watermark Leads STEM Discussions at Sandhurst Military Academy

Through Xylem Watermark, our team in the UK attended a STEM Careers fair at Sandhurst Military Academy, where Xylem Watermark engaged with the Academy in water monitoring education programming through Earth Echo, one of our non-profit partners, while leading an interactive workshop on water pumping and digital solutions. Xylem employees have been proud to carry out our mission by focusing on water education, aligning with our 2025 sustainability goal to provide 15 million people with water education to improve quality of life and raise awareness by 2025.

The Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (known fondly as ‘Sandhurst’) originates from 1741 and is home to one of the world’s oldest and finest officer training centres. The aim of the college is to maintain its reputation as a national centre of excellence for leadership, similarly in the US with West Point. The college has astonishing diverse list of alumni from Winston Churchill, Ian Fleming creator of famous secret agent 007 James Bond and Michael Morpurgo - children’s laureate and author of ‘War Horse’. More recently Princes William & Harry have completed their training.

On September 26th & 27th, Xylem employees attended the STEM careers fair where over 2000 young people attended, one of the largest STEM events in the UK. Day 1 was dedicated to females only and all attendees on Day 2 with a continued focus on STEM and water education

Part of the education curriculum included EarthEcho water monitoring on one of the lakes on the estate grounds.

“Our workshop was structured to demonstrate how S.T.E.M is used in the water sector.. We broke down the acronym into its four stages to show this. SCIENCE – We discussed and demonstrated water flow versus gravity and the need for pumps to transport water, TECHNOLOGY – We discussed and demonstrated the use of a variable speed drives, submersible pumps and using SCADA (Supervisory control and data acquisition) via GPRS (General Packet Radio Services) to control and monitor the equipment, ENGINEERING –demonstrated how the equipment was designed and constructed for both the event and on live sites, and finally MATH – We discussed the calculations used to deliver the required flow depending of the levels of use. We achieved this by having a working example of a water booster set and a graphic of a sewerage system (with a guest appearance)along with how conservation of water is critical to global sustainability. - Steve Edwards
