Project 24: Suplang, Philippines
Makiling Village is situated in an industrial area and most of the locals work as factory workers. Street stalls and agriculture are the other livelihoods of the local community members. The water supply in Makiling Elementary School, as well as in the households in the surrounding area, is from the water district, however it is untreated and creates a risk for the children and family who consume it.
Ms. Alarde, a 5th grade teacher at Makiling Elementary School, shared that malnutrition due to poverty is the greatest challenge in the village. There is a feeding program in the school for the children affected, but it is not enough because some of them do not have clean water at home. With the help of the AquaTower, they will have a source of clean water, which can be used for cooking and drinking. Ms. Alarde also noted that, “There are cultural minority groups in our village. They are the ones who need most attention, especially when it comes to water access and health education.”
“Extreme poverty keeps some of the villagers from having access to safe drinking water. The AquaTower will solve this problem because the children, regardless of their background, will be able to drink clean water whenever they are in school.”
- Mr. Ocampo, School Headmaster
